Description (English)
Scientific ecology has focused mainly on the exchange of matter and energy. So-called "sensory ecology" takes a different perspective, focusing on the acquisition of information and the way in which living organisms respond to this sensory information to organise their interactions with their environment. Von Uexkull (1921) was the first proponent of sensory ecology to stress the uniqueness of the sensory worlds in which different organisms live and, consequently, to recognise the need to identify the particular characteristics of the environment that are relevant to each species. This sensory information is crucial when it comes to understanding how living organisms respond to rapid human-induced environmental change. Sensory ecology can then be used to understand how certain species – including humans – respond to these rapid environmental changes and how the negative impacts of these changes can be mitigated. Sensory ecology can thus be used to better understand how human beings interact with their environment, how they perceive the ecological processes at work in natural or minimally-engineered habitats, how they benefit from these interactions and their ability to perceive the impacts of rapid environmental change. This interdisciplinary course lies at the interface of neuro-ethology, ecology and experimental psychology and aims to familiarise scientific and literary students at Bachelor, Master and PhD level with the fundamental concepts of sensory ecology applied to the auditory modality (Hearing) and to provide knowledge and initiate reflection on its applications to human beings. The course begins with a general presentation of the conceptual framework of sensory ecology, followed by a presentation of the diversity of the auditory ’sensory worlds’ of mammals, birds, amphibians and insects. The teaching then focuses on how humans hear natural soundscapes, natural entities such as birds, insects, water etc. and their variations. The presentation concludes with an account of the ecological issues involved in acoustic ’pollution’ of habitats, ’sensory danger zones’ and ’ecological traps’.
